THERMOWOOD is a beautiful, sustainable wood material produced by using natural methods, heat and steam. Thermal modification improves the wood’s properties, thereby expanding the range of applications in which the wood can be used. Thermowood is dimensionally stable, resistant to decay and resin free. It can be used inside or outdoors, in any climate. Thermowood is an non-toxic natural product which is easy to machine and install. Thermowood is a sustainable and durable choice for facades, solar shades and other exterior applications as well as for interiors. Due the wood material is 100% resin free, Thermowood is also suitable for saunas.
Thermally modified timber has beautiful brown tone, which naturally weathers over time to beautiful silver-gray patina, if the wood is left untreated with pigmented and UV-protected wood oil.
Proficiency for premiun quality
Our mills in Finland transform the very best Nordic Pine and Spruce into beautiful and long-lasting Lunawood Thermowood®. The patented production process is based on the gradual thermal modification of the wood, wherein the chemical and physical properties undergo a permanent change. Thermal treatment means that the process itself uses only water vapor and heat; no chemicals are being used. Heat inside the thermal modification chamber is slowly raised up to 212°C and the whole process can last up to 110 hours. Water is needed for two reasons: because the temperature rises so high, the water prevents the wood from burning during the thermo-treatment cycle. Water is also used to ensure the quality of the final product. Namely, the final moisture is added to the product to prevent cracking and ensuring long life. When the process is complete, the moisture percentage of the raw material is around 4 – 7 %.
